There are few advertising campaigns that stop people in their tracks, and few if any of those are by insurance companies using social media.

That's why this use of social media and cause marketing is so impressive. Both because it was staggeringly effective from an engagement and brand perspective, and because it took place within a highly regulated industry.

If you had to start life all over again today, what would be the things you'd need the most?

A roof over your brains, surely. A bed, perhaps. Running water, too. How about a toilet that worked?

I ask this perhaps unnecessary question because of a survey conducted by London's Science Museum. Scientists always care about people, so they asked 3,000 of them what things in this fair world they couldn't live without.

Because people are insane optimists, the one thing that these respondents claimed they couldn't live without was sunshine.

Because people are merely insane, the fifth thing these respondents claimed they couldn't live without was Facebook.

This lengthy New York Times story on the escalating rivalry between Apple and Google hit while I was at SXSW; I didn’t have time to do much more than point out the curious choice to describe Apple employees as Steve Jobs’s “underlings”. (Perhaps “minions” is next.) My quick impression of the story based on the first few paragraphs was that there wasn’t much meat to it, that it was the sort of “conflict makes for a good story so let’s play up any bit of conflict we can find” report that we often see. But the story actually has some interesting details that were news to me. For example: Apple nearly bought AdMob, but Google snatched them away with a higher offer. And, regarding Bill Campbell, who is co-chairman of Apple’s board and a long-time advisor at Google: While Mr. Campbell has tried to be a diplomat and smooth over the problems between Mr. Jobs and Mr. Schmidt, the task hasn’t been easy. Mr. Campbell declined to comment for this article, but people briefed on the matter say that throughout last fall, Mr. Jobs and Mr. Schmidt each lobbied Mr. Campbell to sever his connection with the other’s company, at times even giving him ultimatums to do so. Finally, Mr. Campbell was forced to choose, and according to a person with knowledge of the situation, he dropped his formal responsibilities at Google, although he is still informally mentoring executives there.

Michael Jackson: It's Time For Outlets to Take Responsibility in Covering the Rock Star

Last week Michael Jackson's guitarist discredited widely reported allegations about the star's behaviour on the road. So why is the media refusing to publish her comments? British writer Charles Thomson explores media bias against black music's biggest star.

Aging glam-rocker Gene Simmons made international headlines last month when he claimed to know that Michael Jackson had molested children. In an interview withClassic Rock, Simmons alleged that Jackson was on tape ordering alcohol for children and that during the star's 2005 trial a travel agent had testified to importing Brazilian boys for Jackson's amusement. He also claimed that a musician friend had quit a Jackson tour after seeing 'boys coming out of the hotel rooms.'

I moved to LA to be a part of the MySpace team!

A lot of people have been asking if I moved to L.A., and I didn’t want to say anything until I was sure. Since late last year, I have been contracting with MySpace and only told a few close friends. However, as more people are starting to find I thought it was time I finally talked (or blogged) about my move and what not.

Are you cringing right now? It’s ok if you are, I completely understand. Heck, almost everyone I told’s first reactions was this hilarious face — like they guzzled a jar of pickle juice type sour face — immediately proceeded with a WHY?!? People have also told me the same bajillion reasons why I am out of my mind to want to work there, followed with the prying: “What’s going on? Are you guys tanking?” etc., etc., so when I say it’s ok, I understand, I do.

However, I am proud and honored to be a part of this phenomenal team and MySpace is far from dead. It’s funny how one of the first things out of people’s mouths are: “MySpace isn’t going to beat Facebook.” and that’s completely ok too, since MySpace isn’t trying to be “a Facebook.” Yes, we are both social platforms but what we tend to forget is the most important thing: target audience.

Steve Ballmer has seen the future, and it's Twitter. Microsoft's CEO seemed far more excited by the microblogging startup than any of the offerings from his company during a three-and-a-half minute discussion with the BBC about coming technology. You can watch the full video at the BBC, or view just the Twitter highlight above. If Ballmer's enthusiastic little Twitter story seems imprudent for an executive who is trying to make competing technology, just remember that it's probably the least lethal of Microsoft's big-name competitors. Unlike multi-billion-dollar competitors Apple and Google, or even $500 million+ Facebook, Twitter still counts its revenue in the tens of millions of dollars.

How cute.

Get The Most From Twitter

There have been lots of negative comments in the press recently about Twitter and that’s a shame. What they don’t realise is Twitter is a not always a natural, instant thing; to get Twitter you need to hang around a little longer, pick up new followers and find people to follow. There are no set rules for how to use Twitter. If you want to Tweet about your every day tasks, then as far as I’m concerned, that’s fine. But if you really want to get the full benefit, then below are the things that work for me:

1. Tweet, often and honestly.

That doesn’t necessary mean you tell the truth it just means tweet things from the heart, things that you care about, things that amuse or entertain you or, if you must, things that will get a re-action.

2. Follow

Find people you like and follow them. It doesn’t have to be famous people, just ones that say things you can connect with. They might follow you back!

3. Don’t Tweet because you want more followers!

There are millions of Twitterers, they will follow you because they like what you say in 140 characters, not because you’re trying to sell yourself or other stuff.

4. Show people cool stuff.

Stupid photos, interesting links, things that make you smile or angry, music tracks (see blip.fm) and other peoples blogs!

5. Re-tweet.

Seen a Tweet you like? Make sure others know about it. That’s what makes the Twittersphere go round.

6. Respond

You don’t have to re-tweet everything, but letting people know you’re there and like what they say is always good, so hit reply. Don’t worry if they don’t answer back – it’s not about how they interact with you, but how you interact with them.

7. Block and move on

Don’t get sucked into a flame war. While it’s good to have people with different opinions on your follow list, there’s no need to put up with those you find offensive or annoying. That’s what blocks for.

8. Use hashtags (when necessary)

Hashtags are excellent for grouping comments together. Why is this important? It makes it easier to find items on similar themes; it also helps identify what are the most important issues on twitter (Trending topics).

And finally and most importantly:

9. Its not just about your blog.

When people follow me, I like to follow them back if, and only if, I like what they are tweeting. The number of times I’ve been to individual twitter pages to just find no other interaction, no re-tweets, no hashtags just a Tweets of “Hey, new post today!” Why would I want to read that?

I do, because of Twitter, read other people’s blogs when they post. Why? Because they interact, they communicate, they re-tweet, they hashtag; basically they get out there and are part of the community and I find what they have to say interesting.

In conclusion, Twitter is all about interaction. I only started to blog because of Twitter, I found I had more to say and 140 characters is not enough sometimes. I hope people read it, hey that’s surely the point of blogging, but that’s not why I Tweet. Yes it’s handy for letting people know I’ve blogged a new post (and it’s worth retweeting several times, such is the transitory nature of Twitter) but if that’s all it becomes about, then maybe Twitter isn’t for you.

Wed, 24 Feb 2010 02:21:00 -0800 How Twitter and Facebook Make Us More Productive http://ais2010.posterous.com/how-twitter-and-facebook-make-us-more-product-2 http://ais2010.posterous.com/how-twitter-and-facebook-make-us-more-product-2

Your random tweets about Android apps and last night’s Glee are stifling the economic recovery. At least, that’s the buzz among efficiency mavens, who seem to spend all their time adding up microblogging’s fiscal toll. Last year, Nucleus Research warned that Facebook shaves 1.5 percent off total office productivity; a Morse survey estimated that on-the-job social networking costs British companies $2.2 billion a year.

But for knowledge workers charged with transforming ideas into products — whether gadgets, code, or even Wired articles — goofing off isn’t the enemy. In fact, regularly stepping back from the project at hand can be essential to success. And social networks are particularly well suited to stoking the creative mind.

Studies that accuse social networks of reducing productivity assume that time spent microblogging is time strictly wasted. But that betrays an ignorance of the creative process. Humans weren’t designed to maintain a constant focus on assigned tasks. We need periodic breaks to relieve our conscious minds of the pressure to perform — pressure that can lock us into a single mode of thinking. Musing about something else for a while can clear away the mental detritus, letting us see an issue through fresh eyes, a process that creativity researchers call incubation. “People are more successful if we force them to move away from a problem or distract them temporarily,” observe the authors of Creativity and the Mind, a landmark text in the psychology and neuroscience of creativity. They found that regular breaks enhance problem-solving skills significantly, in part by making it easier for workers to sift through their memories in search of relevant clues.

That doesn’t mean that employees should feel free to play Minesweeper at will, however. According to Don Ambrose, a Rider University professor who studies creative intelligence, incubation is most effective when it involves exposing the mind to entirely novel information rather than just relieving mental pressure. This encourages creative association, the mashing together of seemingly unrelated concepts — a key step in the creative process.

Last week I had the privilege of meeting Adam Greenfield, author of Everyware: The Dawning Age of Ubiquitous Computing. It's one of my favorite books about the Internet of Things and is still ahead of the curve, even though it was written in 2005 and published in 2006. Greenfield was in my city Wellington for the week, so I sat down with him at a local cafe to get his views on the current state of Internet of Things and where it's headed.

If you're unsure what the world will be like when everything is connected to the Internet (hence the term 'everyware'), then read on for Greenfield's acute observations and examples of what's already happening. This will be a multi-part post, published over the course of this week.

What's Changed? Mobile Phones!

Since it's been nearly 4 years since Everyware was published, I asked Greenfield how Internet of Things has evolved since that time. In particular I wanted to know if anything major had changed since the book was first released.

He replied that the mobile phone has been the biggest change. According to Greenfield, the "single biggest failure of imagination in the book was that someone would decisively re-imagine what the phone is."

Mon, 22 Feb 2010 22:19:08 -0800 Placebos Advocated as Active Treatments http://ais2010.posterous.com/placebos-advocated-as-active-treatments http://ais2010.posterous.com/placebos-advocated-as-active-treatments

The placebo effect is a real and therapeutic psychological phenomenon that, with more research, could be exploited more systematically in medical practice, said Australian researchers.

"There is not one placebo effect, but many," wrote Damien Finniss, MSc, of the University of Sydney in Australia, and colleagues in the Feb. 20 issue of The Lancet, arguing that recent research shows that placebo effects can exist even in the absence of an actual placebo.

Much remains to be learned about the mechanisms underlying placebo effects as well as the ethics of providing placebo-based treatments, but it seems likely that eventually these effects can be harnessed to improve patient care, they concluded.

Finniss and colleagues reviewed the literature on the placebo effect, which suggests that it is far more complicated than many people think.

It is more than just taking a pill that patients think is, or could be, an active drug. The act of receiving a pill brings a whole "psychosocial context" into play, according to Finniss and colleagues: it includes not only the patient's desires and expectations but also those of the clinician; their past experiences; and their interaction with each other and with their physical and social environment," they wrote.

"The placebo is inert but the psychosocial context is not," the researchers asserted.

As an example, they cited a randomized, single-blind, three-arm trial that enrolled 262 patients with irritable bowel syndrome, published in 2008 in BMJ. One arm was no treatment; the other two arms used a placebo treatment (a sham acupuncture device).

In one of the latter arms, for interactions with the patients the clinician followed a script that sought to convey attention, warmth, and confidence as well as, occasionally, thoughtful silence. In the other, the clinician simply delivered the placebo needles as quickly and with as little interaction with the patients as possible.

Response rates in the no-treatment, placebo-alone, and placebo plus supportive care groups were 28%, 44%, and 62%, respectively (P<0.001).

"This trial showed that placebo effects can be incrementally added in a manner resembling a graded dose escalation of component factors," Finniss and colleagues wrote.

They also noted that certain patient characteristics -- extroversion, agreeability, and openness to experiences -- were associated with heightened responses when they received supportive care in addition to the placebo treatment, but not with the placebo alone. Outcomes also differed with the practitioners.

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Using Google Earth technology, people can get a general bird's eye view of what the deadly pilot's path looked like before crashing his plane into the Echelon Building in Northwest Austin .

Timeline leading into fatal flight Thursday

  • 9:15 a.m.:  Joseph Stack's house erupts in flames, and neighbors help wife Sheryl Stack and 12-year-old stepdaughter out of the burning home.
  • 9:44 a.m.:  Stack leaves the Georgetown airport
  • 9:56 a.m.:  Stack crashes plane into Echelon Buliding I in Northwest Austin

As authorities continue to investigate the scenes of the plane crash and the house fire, they are beginning to focus more of their attention on the timeline of events.

Stack began the day Thursday by setting his house on fire before taking flight from the Georgetown airport and crashing his plane into the Echelon Building in Northwest Austin shortly after, killing an IRS employee.

Now considered a federal crime by authorities, ATF's Explosives and Fire Investigation Unit is on Stack's torched property on 1827 Dapplegrey Lane. The house fire investigation is one of several investigations to be executed throughout the day.
